What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback therapies are non-pharmacological treatments that use instruments to measure, amplify, and” feed back “physiological information to the patient that is being monitored. Most importantly, the information assists the patient to self regulate their body functions. The patient is trained to observe their physiological responses then attempt to self regulate in an effort to have control over them. Psychological self regulation is the primary goal of biofeedback therapies sand pain management.

Biofeedback can consist of placing electrodes and/or sensors on the body.
There are generally five main types of training:

  1. General EMG Training
  2. Temperature Regulation
  3. Skin Conduction and Respiration
  4. EEG or Neurofeedback; brainwave activity
  5. Heart Rate Variability

Some patients prefer medication to control their condition; others may choose to combine self regulating techniques of biofeedback. Most are highly motivated to simply learn self regulation techniques over medication management when permissible. Biofeedback therapies can be used for a wide variety of physical and mental conditions as well as pain management.
